Slated for mid-September (we’ll announce the exact date soon, so keep those eyes peeled), this informative event will spotlight everything you need to know as the Purple Line enters an exciting new phase. From what happens when we move into the testing phase, to access point particulars, as well as behind-the-scenes project updates, we’ve got a lot to share!

We’re inviting top leaders from the Purple Line team and both counties to bring their insights and knowledge. Whether you're a daily commuter, local business owner, or just a curious neighbor, this forum promises to be engaging, energizing, and packed with useful info.

HAPPENING ALONG THE PURPLE LINE CORRIDOR

Paul Wiedefeld Steps Down as Maryland’s Secretary of Transportation

We join many across the state in acknowledging the resignation of Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld, who will step away from public service on August 1 after more than 40 years in transportation leadership. During his tenure, Secretary Wiedefeld helped reposition the department to prioritize safety, secured over $5 billion in federal grants for infrastructure improvements, and led a swift response to the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Of particular importance to our community, Secretary Wiedefeld played a pivotal role in keeping the Purple Line project on track, ensuring continued progress on our transformative light rail line. His leadership helped launch dynamic vehicle testing, advance station construction, and support small businesses impacted by construction through targeted grant programs.

We were especially grateful and delighted to welcome Secretary Wiedefeld as our guest speaker at our most recent Purple Line NOW forum. He generously answered questions from attendees and shared valuable insights and updates on the project’s progress. His candor and commitment to transparency were deeply appreciated.

We thank Secretary Wiedefeld for his distinguished service and wish him well in his next chapter.

Many businesses along the corridor are doing their best as we plow through the heavy construction phase of the project, but often could use a little boost by way of a friendly reminder to all of us, residents and workers alike, that they are still open for business and hope you'll remember them as you plan where you'll eat and shop. If you know of a business or area that might need a little boost, send the information our way and we'll be sure to include them in future editions of the Purple Line NOW Newsletter when we can.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES & PROJECT FEATURES

Construction Progress & Milestones

• Project is now 76% complete with 20 stations under construction and over 67,500 feet of track laid out of the planned 193,100.
• Dynamic testing of light rail vehicles continues along Veterans Parkway and other segments of the alignment.
• Bridge construction underway at key intersections, including Connecticut Avenue and Kenilworth Avenue/Riverdale Road.
• Campus Drive near River Road at UMD has a traffic shift in place to allow track installation to the Metro station.

Closures & Detours

• Wayne Avenue & Fenton Street intersection** in Silver Spring is closed through August 2025, affecting Ride On routes 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, and 28.
• East Wayne Avenue is temporarily one-way westbound only through August 21, 2025, for track installation. 
• Ellin Road remains closed between Harkins Road and Emerson Place with two-way traffic open from Emerson Place to Veterans Parkway.
• Bonifant Street continues to operate one-way toward Fenton Street; sidewalk upgrades are underway and expected to wrap up by year’s end.

Ninth Purple Line Light Rail Vehicle Arrives!

We are celebrating the arrival of the ninth Light Rail Vehicle (LRV), a sleek 142-foot addition to the growing Purple Line fleet. Shipped in from New York, the new LRV now resides at the Operations and Maintenance Facility in Prince George’s County! Click here to see its arrival in action!

How Will You Access the Nearest Purple Line Station or the CCT Trail?

We encourage you to get involved! Take a look at these trail connection maps which includes each of the hiker/biker paths as well as community connection to the Capital Crescent Trail. Check out your neighborhood and if you have questions regarding how you get to a station or trail, contact the Purple Line Outreach team or us here at Purple Line NOW and we'll help connect you to the correct entity in order to understand where and how to access stations and the trail.

Safety First!

In the latest edition of MDOT MTA's Purple Line newsletter, riders received some great updates on accessibility and safety features. Purple Line light rail vehicles (LRVs) are equipped with bike racks and have low floors to easily facilitate “rolling on” with a bike. The LRVs are level with the platform, minimizing steps or gaps and making it easier to board, especially for passengers with bicycles. MDOT also highlighted the Purple Line’s Ride Safe campaign, reminding everyone to “Be particular. Ride perpendicular!” when crossing tracks to avoid accidents.

We want to remind everyone to slow down when driving through construction zones. The road may be bumpy so heed all speed limits and keep an eagle eye out for those hard-working construction workers!

As trains begin testing on tracks and traffic continues to be detoured due to ongoing construction, it is important to be more aware than ever when on foot or bike! 

When crossing Purple Line tracks:

• Use crosswalks.
• Cross at a right angle, perpendicular to the tracks.
• Do not ride parallel in the trackway – tires will get caught.
• Use extra caution when wet or frozen – rail can be slippery.

We'll have more safety tips in future newsletters, but please be careful and exercise caution as you navigate these new surroundings!

One area that has been under significant construction for a good while now is Bonifant Street in Silver Spring. Read below for an update on what's happening in that area.

Bonifant Street: Still Buzzing, Still Open for Business

If you’ve driven down Bonifant over the past few years, you’ve probably noticed it's a hive of construction activity. And while the street has never been closed, traffic continues to run one-way toward Fenton Street -- and will for a little while longer.

Good news, though, shops and restaurants are open and need your business. The builder is working closely with business owners to make sure access is always maintained and any temporary adjustments are handled directly.

We recommend signing up for construction updates if you haven’t already (especially if you live or work along the Purple Line corridor). It’s the best way to stay ahead of any changes to pedestrian routes or short-term disruptions. Just [click here] and follow the sign-up instructions. It’s quick and worth it!

Bonifant is undergoing quite a bit of utility work, but things are moving in the right direction -- literally! Sidewalks are getting an upgrade, starting with the north side, and we’ve heard that by the end of this year, those major construction impacts will finally ease. Even better? Road and sidewalk work is expected to wrap up before the year’s out!

Keep in mind that the Purple Line light rail will run right down Bonifant Street, through the Silver Spring Library (yes, there’s a station there!), and onto Wayne Avenue. That’s a big project in a small footprint, so yes, construction is intense. But the payoff will be worth it.

In the meantime, why not show some extra love to the amazing shops and restaurants on Bonifant? Throw on some sunscreen, grab a friend, take a stroll, and support the local gems that make this street so special.

Grant Opportunities for Small Businesses Along the Purple Line Corridor!

Small businesses are the backbone of our communities and we’re thrilled to share news that can help them thrive! The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is offering vital funding opportunities through the Purple Line Small Business Grant Program designed to support businesses and organizations impacted by the transformative Purple Line project.

MDOT recently announced the first round of recipients for the Purple Line Small Business Grant Program, which launched earlier this year to help business owners maintain operations, retain employees, and expand services amid construction disruptions. This initiative saw an overwhelming response, with more than 450 applications submitted. After a rigorous review, over 100 businesses in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties received grants ranging from $1,000 to $40,000, totaling $1 million in funding awarded so far!

The next round of funding opened on Monday, June 2, 2025. If your business wasn’t selected in the first round or hasn’t applied yet, now is your chance! Applications are open until June 27, 2025, and businesses are strongly encouraged to apply.

With $4 million set aside for eligible businesses over the four-year program, this funding could make a meaningful difference for companies that keep our local economy strong. For eligibility requirements, applications details, and access to multilingual support, please visit MDOT's small business grant page.

Ride On Detours Due to Purple Line Construction

Detour Alert! Ride On Routes Adjusted for Purple Line Progress

Heads up, Silver Spring riders! Starting Wednesday, June 18, major construction activity related to the Purple Line project will temporarily close a few key intersections. And yes, that means some Ride On buses may be taking a scenic route.

What to Expect:

Wayne Avenue & Fenton Street: This busy intersection will be temporarily closed through August 2025 to allow for continued construction. The following Ride On routes will be detoured during this time: Routes 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, and 28

Wayne Avenue & Manchester Road: Also beginning June 18, detours will be in place for: Routes 12, 13, and 19. These changes will last until around the end of August 2025.

Eastbound Lane of East Wayne Avenue: From June 18 through August 21, 2025, crews will install light rail tracks between Manchester Road and Manchester Place Station. East Wayne Avenue will become temporarily one-way westbound only, with access maintained for residents, pedestrians, and westbound vehicles coming from Flower Avenue.

Lebanon Street: Additional detours will begin June 18 and affect routes 15, 16, 17, 18, and 25. These changes are expected to remain in place until at least early July 2025.

Please plan ahead and stay informed. Montgomery County DOT has posted detailed detour maps to help you navigate the changes. If you ride any of the affected routes, we highly recommend checking out the detour maps and following Ride On’s Facebook page or signing up for service alerts. 

We know detours can be a hassle, but this is all part of making big moves toward a more connected, sustainable future. Thanks for hanging in there! Remember, every detour today helps pave the way for better transit tomorrow!

Spring Community Advisory Team (CAT) Meetings Have Concluded

The Spring 2025 Community Advisory Team meetings have concluded, but all of the information can be found at the project website. Be sure to have a peek to see where construction is headed in your area.

Sketch Plan Approved to Redevelop Medical Plaza in Silver Spring

The Montgomery County Planning Board has unanimously approved a sketch plan to redevelop the University Boulevard Medical Plaza into a modern 148-unit apartment building. The project, led by Sonina Properties, aims to replace the aging medical office building with a vibrant residential space that better serves the community.

One of the most promising aspects of this development is its proximity to the Purple Line, with two future stations—Takoma Langley and Piney Branch—just a short walk away. This means easier commutes, better connectivity, and increased accessibility for residents. The Purple Line will provide a direct link to key destinations, making it a game-changer for those who rely on public transit.

Construction is anticipated to begin in early to mid-2026, marking a significant step forward in revitalizing University Boulevard and embracing the benefits of transit-oriented development. With the Purple Line nearby, residents will enjoy greater mobility, reduced reliance on cars, and a more connected community.

First time in 50 years, Fish Swim Upstream at Long Branch & Piney Branch Road

A once-blocked stream in Silver Spring is now open to native fish for the first time in 50 years, thanks to a restoration project by Montgomery Parks and the Maryland Transit Administration. The Long Branch tributary, previously obstructed by a concrete barrier, now features a specially engineered fish ladder, allowing species like the eastern blacknose dace, creek chub, and white sucker to reconnect. The project, part of the Purple Line’s environmental mitigation efforts, also raised the streambed and stabilized the channel to improve aquatic biodiversity and water quality. Officials hope these upgrades will eventually allow migratory species like the American eel to return.

What's Happening Now

If you’ve been following the Purple Line journey—or caught the latest Purple Line NOW Newsletter  -- you know something exciting is happening: dynamic testing is officially underway! That’s right—after years of anticipation, the project is moving full steam ahead (or rather, full rail speed ahead) toward bringing a modern, efficient transit solution to Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. As the sleek light rail vehicles roll out onto a one-mile test track near the Operations and Maintenance Facility on Veterans Parkway in Glenridge, Maryland, engineers are putting them through their paces, testing braking, propulsion, electrical systems, signals, and communications to ensure everything runs safely and smoothly. Think of it like a dress rehearsal before these trains make their big debut across the full route.

What’s Next?

Testing will ramp up throughout 2026, with more light rail vehicles arriving for evaluation. Once the trains pass their tests on the dedicated track, they’ll begin making their way onto longer stretches of the Purple Line route. It's thrilling to see the pieces falling into place!

Spotting a Test Train? Here’s What You Need to Know!

As testing expands, you might spot Purple Line trains cruising along the tracks. If you do, enjoy the sight—but stay safe! While it’s tempting to stop and snap a photo, remember to follow all traffic and pedestrian rules. The next year will be a game-changer for this transit project, and we’re one step closer to riding the Purple Line for real.

Summer Construction Ahead: A Few Detours on the Road to a Better Commute

Exciting changes are on the horizon as Purple Line construction moves full speed ahead! With each passing day, we get closer to the long-awaited transit improvements that will make traveling through our region more seamless, sustainable, and efficient. But—like any great transformation—a temporary inconvenience is part of the process.

This summer, several key intersections and roads will experience closures and detours to accommodate construction progress. Here are a few of them, but we strongly encourage you to sign up for construction texts to help keep you informed:

Bethesda/Chevy Chase 

• Work continues on the Bethesda Headhouse, affecting pedestrian access near Elm Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Excavation for the Purple Line connection to Metro’s Red Line will involve periodic blasting through June 2025.
• Excavation for the shaft that will connect the Purple Line to Metro's Red Line in Bethesda will continue through June 2025. This operation will include blasting the rock within the shaft located at the work zone on Elm Street at Wisconsin Avenue. Blasting is planned during daytime hours, with additional work in the area occurring over multiple shifts between excavation and removal of spoils from the site. In advance of each blast, a warning horn will be activated. The use of backup alarms will be limited during nighttime hours. Work may occur in two shifts, weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Silver Spring/Takoma Park

• On or about June 18, through August 21, 2025, crews will install light rail tracks, reconstruct sidewalks, and complete stormwater drainage and utility crossings across the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street. This work will require a temporary full closure of the Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street intersection to vehicular traffic. To minimize disruption, construction has been scheduled to coincide with the local school summer break. However, some WMATA and Ride-On bus routes may be affected. Please check directly with your transit service provider for any updates or detour information. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Please follow posted signage and directions from on-site personnel.

University Boulevard & Piney Branch Road

• Starting June 13, left turns will be restricted at this intersection, and thru traffic should avoid Dale Drive between Colesville Road and Piney Branch Road.

Riverdale Park

• Work continues along Kenilworth Avenue (MD 201) between River Road and East-West Highway (MD 410) through spring 2025. Work includes stormwater drainage installation and roadway work in preparation for track installation. Access to driveways, businesses, and bus service will be maintained. All on-street parking has been eliminated, and vehicles will be towed at the owner's expense. Work may occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.
• A work zone in the center of Kenilworth Avenue from River Road to East-West Highway to allow track installation remains in effect. Left turns are restricted onto Kenilworth Avenue from Rittenhouse Street (eastbound) and from Rittenhouse Street onto Kenilworth Avenue (westbound). This restriction will be in place through spring. Work may occur from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends, as needed.

To make navigation easier during this phase, updated signage and alternate route recommendations will be available to guide drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians through affected areas. Patience, planning, and a little extra travel time will be helpful in making the transition smooth.

The best part? Once the construction dust settles, we’ll all get to enjoy a brand-new transit experience—connecting neighborhoods, businesses, and destinations like never before! It is hard, no doubt, with detours, noise, and closures, but we are looking forward to a future where getting around is simpler and more enjoyable!

As trains begin testing on tracks and traffic continues to be detoured due to ongoing construction, it is important to be more aware than ever when on foot or bike! 

When crossing Purple Line tracks:

• Use crosswalks.
• Cross at a right angle, perpendicular to the tracks.
• Do not ride parallel in the trackway – tires will get caught.
• Use extra caution when wet or frozen – rail can be slippery.

Maryland Purple Line Senior Project Director Ray Biggs II provides the latest progress update on the Purple Line project for Spring 2025. Construction advances steadily across the 16-mile alignment from New Carrollton in Prince George's County to Bethesda in Montgomery County. Significant milestones are being achieved as development continues.

The Purple Line: More Than Just a Train!

When you think of the Purple Line, you might picture a sleek light rail zipping through Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, connecting communities and cutting down commute times. But here’s the thing—this project is so much more than just a transit line! It’s a once-in-a-generation overhaul of our region’s infrastructure, and the benefits will ripple through our communities for decades to come, whether you ever step foot on the train or not.

Let’s dive into some of the hidden gems of the Purple Line project:

• Modernized Utility Infrastructure: Did you know that some of our utility systems—water, gas, and electrical lines—are decades old? The Purple Line is replacing these outdated systems with modern ones that meet today’s safety and efficiency standards. This means fewer service disruptions, more reliable utilities for residents and businesses, and a safer environment overall. It’s like giving our community a much-needed tech upgrade!
• Improved Stormwater Management: With climate change bringing more intense storms, managing water has never been more critical. The Purple Line includes upgraded drainage systems designed to prevent flooding and reduce water pollution. These improvements protect property, keep our streets safer, and contribute to a healthier environment. It’s a win-win for everyone.
• Enhanced Public Safety: By bringing utilities up to code, the project minimizes risks like gas leaks and electrical faults. This creates a safer living and working environment for all of us.
• Increased Capacity for Growth: Our region is growing, and modernized utilities are key to supporting that growth. The new systems can handle higher demand, paving the way for future development and making our area more attractive to businesses and residents alike. 
• Energy Efficiency and Sustainability: The upgraded utility systems are designed to be more energy-efficient, reducing overall energy consumption and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a step toward a greener, more sustainable future for our community. 
• Economic Boost: The construction and infrastructure upgrades are creating jobs and stimulating local businesses. Plus, the improved utilities make our area more appealing for new investments and development opportunities. 
• Reduced Maintenance Costs: Outdated systems are expensive to maintain and prone to breakdowns. The new, up-to-date infrastructure will require less frequent repairs, saving money for utility providers—and ultimately for all of us as residents.

Highlights from the Community Advisory Team Meetings

The College Park, Long Branch, and University Boulevard CAT meetings occurred earlier this month. As always, you can find the video and slide show at the project website. 

If you live or work in one of these areas, we strong encourage you to check out the presentations where you'll find lots of information about the work that has been completed, is ongoing, and coming soon in the next few months. You can also view highlights from the presentation on the slide show. The project is 76% complete (amazing!) and as you may have read, entering into the "dynamic testing" phase. If you drive along Veterans Highway, you may have caught a glimpse of one of the shiny rail cars being tested along the one-mile stretch of testing track!

During the presentations at all the CATS that have occurred so far, the panel from the Purple Line team highlighted what we should expect during this testing phase:

• Initial testing will occur on one mile of dedicated alignment track at the Operations and Maintenance Facility (OMF) site with no public access.

• LRV testing includes braking and propulsion, vehicle safety systems, emergency communications, signals and switches.

You may notice:

• Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) moving along the test track at varying speeds.
• Periodic horn and bell testing.
• Overhead Catenary System (OCS) Wires which carry 1500 Volts DC. Assume all OCS wires are live and carrying extremely dangerous electric current at all times. 
• The test track is fenced and highly visible "Danger" signs are posted in multiple locations.

Purple Line Officials Update Timeline for Spring Street Bridge Work

A key element of the Purple Line's design, demanding significant collaboration between agencies, is the Spring Street Bridge in Silver Spring. Following a review of the current track installation timeline in this area, the project team now estimates that the bridge will be ready to open by late 2025. Until the completion of this work, the detour previously outlined by the Purple Line Outreach team (accessible through the attached document and available on their website) will remain in effect.
