"Our over-reliance on cars and $4-per-gallon gasoline has led us to dig a really deep hole for ourselves. The Purple Line is the ladder that helps us climb up out of this hole toward the light of rational land use, friendly commutes and a stable climate." Mike Tidwell, director of CCAN

The Purple Line Pledge for 2006

We, the undersigned elected officials and candidates for offices in the 2006 election in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland, enthusiastically support the Inner Purple Line. Our vision of this project is:

  1. A generally at-grade light rail line that is primarily on its own right of way;
  2. Excellent service linking the Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park and New Carrollton Metro Stations with stops in Long Branch, Langley Park, the University of Maryland (on campus), Riverdale park and other communities along the service corridor;
  3. Completion of the Capital Crescent hiker-biker trail alongside the transit line on the Georgetown Branch railroad right of way between Bethesda and Silver Spring where it will connect directly to the Metropolitan Branch Trail;
  4. A community- and environmentally-friendly design that mitigates negative impacts in a cost-effective manner without impeding the speedy implementation of this project.

We pledge that, if elected, we will provide political leadership to get this project under construction within the next four years. We will make every effort to build even greater public support for the project.

Signed:
