"The Inner Purple Line is not just about Smart Growth. It is about economic justice. The new line will make it easier for thousands of poor and working-class people to get to jobs." Peter Shapiro, former Chair, Prince George's County Council

Who We Are
updated November 9, 2007

Purple Line Now! is comprised of citizen, business, environmental, civic, minority and labor organizations. We formed as the Coalition to Build the Inner Purple Line in Fall, 2002 around a simple mission statement:

"Our mission is to build the Inner Purple Line. The Inner Purple Line is a light rail transit line from Bethesda to New Carrollton, integrated with a hiker/biker trail between Bethesda and Silver Spring."

Our Board: PLN is governed by a Board of Directors with balanced representation from the environmental, civic, business and labor organizational base of support for the Purple Line. We believe the strength of our organization is in its diversity and continue to work to expand our base of support in every way.

Organizations supportive of the Purple Line: Since the founding of our group, support for this project has steadily grown among a wide variety of organizations. We are proud of the organizational diversity on the List of Organizational Supporters. PLN Coalition member organizations are denoted by an asterisk after the organization name. We thank supporters at our October 2007 fundraiser: October Benefit Hosts.

State and County Candidates Supportive of the Purple Line: In 2006, Purple Line Now! circulated a Purple Line Pledge to support the transit project among candidates for office in Prince George's and Montgomery Counties as well as some state-wide candidates. More than 120 candidates for office had signed our pledge before the Sept. 12, 2006 primary. See: State and County Candidates Who Signed the Pledge. We extend our thanks to all candidates, winners and runner-ups, who supported the Purple Line in their primary races.

State and County Elected Officials Supportive of the Purple Line: We appreciate the support we have received from elected officials from all political parties. Our State and County allies are listed here: Supportive State and County Elected Officials.

Local Elected Officials Supportive of the Purple Line: The Purple Line will not be realized without broad community support. Local elected officials from Prince Georges and Montgomery communities are listed here: Supportive Local Elected Officials.

Student Leaders Supportive of the Purple Line: We appreciate the growing support for the Purple Line among student leaders at the Graduate, undergraduate and high school level. These student activists are tomorrow's state, county and local leaders and many of them know more than their parents how difficult it is to get around town without a car. Student leaders from Prince Georges and Montgomery communities are listed here: Supportive Student Leaders.
