The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) held five public workships in November 2004 in an effort to finalize its Alternatives Retained For Detailed Study (ARDS) in early Spring, 2005. Another example of rail trail coexistance can now be seen at the New York Avenue Metrorail Station. About 2,000 feet of the Metropolitan Branch Trail were constructed on an elevated structure adjacent to the station at a cost of $6 million. This important segment passes beneath Florida and New York Avenues before terminating. On to Silver Spring!
Light rail is finally coming back to the National Capital Region. A groundbreaking was held in the District of Columbia for the Anacostia light rail demonstration project on October 13th. The demonstration line will only be 2.7 miles long, but it will connect the Anacostia metrorail station to Bowling Air Force Base.
The Montgomery County Council endorsed further study of two options for extending the Purple Line through Silver Spring to University Boulevard in October 2004. The City of College Park and University of Maryland issued a joint letter on the Purple Line in July 2004; they continue to work together to maintain a common approach to this project on the College Park area focus group.
The City of Riverdale Park has encouraged study of a stop in the vicinity of Kenilworth Avenue and East West Highway and in the M-Square research park area of River Road.
