"Our over-reliance on cars and $4-per-gallon gasoline has led us to dig a really deep hole for ourselves. The Purple Line is the ladder that helps us climb up out of this hole toward the light of rational land use, friendly commutes and a stable climate." Mike Tidwell, director of CCAN | ![]() |

In November of 2002, it appeared that the incoming administration of Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. was thinking about termination of planning work on the Purple Line. This was a major factor in the formation of the Coalition To Build The Inner Purple Line. Tuesday, December 03, 2002 4:34 PM Subject: Councils pass Purple Line resolutions As their first acts of business, both Montgomery and Prince George's County Councils passed resolutions supportive of the inner purple line today. Montgomery's resolution is not a surprise, given the Council's decade-long history of support. However, the resolution passed with a vote of 7-2 - stronger than votes among the previous Councils. This compares to a 6-3 vote in support of the ICC. A vote on the Corridor Cities Transitway passed unanimously, however. Prince George's vote was more significant. Not only was it unanimous, but it broke with the long-standing tradition of not conducting business at the December (inaugural) meeting of a new Council. Additionally, past Councils have never been particularly enthusiastic about the Bethesda to New Carrollton proposal. The current vote demonstrates a recognition that the proposal has a realistic chance of getting FTA approval moving forward if it gains momentum at the local level and if planning is not terminated by the new State administration. |
