"The Inner Purple Line is not just about Smart Growth. It is about economic justice. The new line will make it easier for thousands of poor and working-class people to get to jobs." Peter Shapiro, former Chair, Prince George's County Council

Become A Friend of the Purple Line
May, 2008

In January, 2008, we celebrated our 5th birthday and last July we took on a new name, Purple Line Now!, which reflects the fact that the so-called outer Purple Line is no longer being considered and the focus is on moving the Purple Line from planning to construction. Our five year effort to promote this important regional transit project that will connect Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties has reaped considerable success, but the job has not been easy.

  • During the Ehrlich administration, study of the Purple Line slowed to a crawl with the addition of extraneous alignments and options.

  • Our efforts were also stymied by a campaign to spread misinformation in the neighborhoods through which the Purple Line will pass.

With your help, we can overcome these and other hurdles. The Purple Line will help us address the growing crisis of fossil fuel precipitated global warming. It will have a huge positive impact on our inner suburban communities, with tens of thousands of people spending far less time stuck in traffic each day. We must improve east-west transit or our communities will face a very difficult future.

Our vision is of more people riding quiet and comfortable trains to work, school or on shopping trips. Hundreds of thousands of people will benefit from the Purple Line as users, business owners, or as residents of communities it will serve. That is why the list of organizational supporter of the Purple Line now exceeds 100 and includes major business, environmental, union and civic organizations.

We know that it will take a huge and broad coalition to get the Purple Line. At this critical juncture, we want to redouble our efforts to make sure that the tremendous benefits of this transit project will no longer be blocked by the localized opposition of some neighborhoods and a powerful country club.

Let one thing be perfectly clear about our effort: we are not proposing to harm or sacrifice any neighborhoods OR country clubs in order to build this project. Our inner suburban communities will prosper with the Purple Line. Additionally, a bike trail of regional importance, held hostage by transit opponents for more than a decade, will be completed as part of the Purple Line project.

We need your help to step up our effort to get the Purple Line built. We know the opponents of this project have deep pockets as well as plenty of connections in high places.

We will continue to take the high road in our efforts, by reaching out to broaden our base of support and by building alliances with others in the State of Maryland. Our list of supportive elected local, county and state elected officials is over 100, and the number continues to grow.

But we know that to win this effort we need to do many things that take money. We need to effectively and professionally lobby in Annapolis and on Capitol Hill. We need to counter the misinformation that has been effectively disseminated by project opponents with our own literature and advertising.

Please help us with whatever you can afford. Send us a check today to begin building the transportation system for tomorrow.
